Welcome to Gloomhaven

Gloomhaven is a cooperative campaign game of tactical combat and branching narratives in a unique fantasy world. Form a party of mercenaries from a starting selection of six fully unique classes, each with their own abilities, mechanics, strengths, weaknesses, and upgrade paths. Your mercenary will choose a personal quest card, describing their motivations in this dark, magical world. When this quest is completed they will retire, unlocking a new class (there are 12 to unlock!) that is now available for anyone to play.

The story of this epic game begins when your mercenary party is approached by a red-cloaked (and red-tailed) merchant Jekserah, who offers you payment to deal with some bandits who are causing trouble for caravans of goods entering the city of Gloomhaven. What sounds innocuous enough will start you on a journey throughout not only Gloomhaven, but the surrounding world – from the Dagger Forest, to the Copperneck Mountains, to the Lingering Swamp, to the Misty Sea. The story will play out through a branching narrative, where decisions you make will impact the campaign in meaningful (and permanent) ways. Your party will earn (or lose) reputation among three unique factions vying for power in the city. Who you decide to associate yourself with will impact how the story unfolds.

The heart of the game plays out scenario-by-scenario – the game boasts 101 of them, all unique. Each scenario will feature an objective (I.E kill all the enemies, escape, protect somebody for a certain amount of rounds, etc) and a set of enemies for you to encounter, each with their own unique deck of ability cards telling you what they will do each round. Depending on what mercenary you’ve selected to play, you will start each scenario with a hand of 8 to 12 cards, each having two different, unique actions on them – one on the top half of the card and the other on the bottom. Each round, you’ll pick two cards to play, and when your turn comes around (the cards also determine the order everyone goes), you’ll play the top action of one card and the bottom action of the other. This is a system that is simple to understand, but has loads of depth as you start to look at all the options you have available to you.

As you are successful in scenarios not only will the story advance, but you’ll gain loot to buy items, you’ll level-up your characters (gaining a choice each level between two new enticing ability cards), and you’ll experience event cards both in the city and when you’re on the road. All of this leads to a deep, tactical, immersive experience that is like no other.

All of this led to Gloomhaven being one of only eight tabletop games ever to be rated as #1 of all time(from a pool of over 170,000!) on the website BoardGameGeek.com.
