More About the Mercs
Satha
Mayor of Frosthaven
Satha is the perfect class to play if you love the feel of being a battlefield commander. A tanky melee fighter, Satha excels at keeping her allies safe and commanding them around the map. Satha has abilities to improve the actions that her allies take during Satha's turn, meaning that granting your allies moves and attacks becomes even more powerful than normal. Satha relies on the ice element to empower her abilities. She's a class with cards that are easy to understand and play, but a level of depth to play her very well. Whether you love being a melee fighter, a sturdy frontliner, or commander from the back line, Satha can do it all.
Satha was the appointed Captain of the Guard in the small, struggling outpost of Frosthaven. The death of all her superiors after a vicious Algox raid led to her taking charge, fighting against both elements and adversaries as the precarious settlements hung on by a thread. Satha is motivated by the love she has for her child Nat (a talented one in their own right), and is known throughout Frosthaven as strong, honorable, and fair. Her job involves not only coordinating with her town guard, but with suppliers to ensure that Frosthaven doesn't end up in ruins.
Cassandra
Forgotten Diviner
Cassandra is a diviner, which means she specializes at both seeing and altering the future. Cassandra has two core mechanics that play out in her cards. First, she can place rifts on the map, which she then can use to do all sorts of good things for her allies and bad things to her enemies. The more rifts you place, the stronger an ability targeting figures on rifts becomes! She also has divination abilities, which let her allies (or herself) look at their attack modifier decks and rearrange cards, potentially putting bad draws on the bottom of the deck. You can also rearrange the enemy deck, peering into the future and potentially avoiding disaster. This is a complex class that interacts with the game in ways no other class can, but when played well her power level is enormously impactful. And if you have somebody in your party who considers themselves to be the unluckiest player in the world when they draw from their modifier deck, this class can help them avoid those pesky null cards.
Cassandra is an Aesther, a group long ago cast across time and space after a great catastrophe. After spending hundreds of years willing herself whole again, Cassandra gained great understanding of the relationship between planes, finding patterns she could consciously mold, where others see endless chaos. With that came the ability to see the Corruption -- the original source of the great catastrophe. Cassandra will use her great power to shape the strands of fate in order to bring peace across the planes.
Anaphi
Fallen Lion
Anaphi is a unique Mindthief. If you're familiar with Gloomhaven, you're familiar with the Mindthief class. While Anaphi shares many of the same themes and mechanics of that class, she is her own class. Core to any Mindthief are their Augment cards, and Anaphi has a full set of her own unique ones. Once in play, these Augments add bonuses to your melee attacks or to the abilities of your summons. And speaking of summons, Anaphi has far more than the original Mindthief, giving her a way to play almost entirely as a summon-focused class if you'd like. And finally, fans of Jaws of the Lion will notice some tributes to the four original classes from that game in Anaphi's level up choices!
Anaphi is the central focus of the Gloomhaven Fallen Lion comic. She is a Vermling Mindthief who was left to die in the sewers when it was saved by a not-too-altruistic Harrower that Anaphi refers to as "Bug Body". Aided by her haunting-Harrower corruption, Anaphi worked her way into the Jaws of the Lion, alongside the Hatchet, Red Guard, Demolitionist, and Voidwarden. Like any Mindthief, Anaphi has a strong psychic connection with the rats that live in the sewers, including an especially strong bond with one that she calls Rosie. Anaphi is an underdog, no doubt -- she is constantly tormented by Bug Body -- and has the most to prove of any member of the Jaws of the Lion. But Anaphi is a fighter, and will dig deep to survive.
Hail
Irritable Enchanter
Hail might be the most unique class in all of the 'Haven games. While an incredibly powerful enchantress, Hail lacks the motivation to contribute to her team's success unless she builds resolve (represented as tokens you can gain) by doing things that make motivate her -- looting, telling her allies what to do, standing still (who has time to walk around?), or even being left alone. Once her resolve builds, you will find that she has incredibly powerful abilities unlike any class out there. You may also get a chuckle at the names of her cards, dripping with theme, with titles like "Leave Me Alone", "Abundant Nuiscance", and "Perpetual Annoyance".
Hail is an ancient Aesther mage, and incredibly powerful at that. Living so long, though, creates feelings of boredom, and Hail can't be bothered to care about the mundane elements of day-to-day life. Hail consumes herself with mysterious projects, working out the Crooked Bone, an abandoned tavern in Gloomhaven. There she researches the curiosities of the planes, using those that cross her path as tools to help her with the less desirable elements of her research. Hail holds immeasurable power, and -- if her inclinations that day match your party's goals -- then you'll find her an amazing member of your party.
